​We are committed to establishing a skilled and professional dental team that provides exceptional, timely care for every patient in a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment. Through compassion, efficiency, and excellence, we help individuals of all ages achieve optimal oral health and smiles they are proud to share.

OUR STORY
​
With a strong commitment to Birmingham’s revitalization efforts and to ensuring that every child has access to outstanding dental care, Dr. Roger Smith and Mary McSpadden joined forces to create a state-of-the-art dental practice for children and teens in the heart of Woodlawn.
In February 2006, Smiles for Keeps opened its doors in a leased space on 1st Avenue North. Hopes were high that Smiles for Keeps would meet the needs of this community that was without a pediatric dentist office. Thanks to wonderful patients and a community that overwhelmingly welcomed having a dental “home” for its children, Smiles for Keeps outgrew its original location on 1st Avenue North. At that point, Dr. Smith and Mary decided it was time to undertake a brand new construction project by building the first new business office in Woodlawn in over 25 years.
Happily, Smiles for Keeps opened its doors at 5500 1st Avenue South in August of 2012 in a space that was double the size of the first office – and, of course, DOUBLE THE FUN!

WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT

Our team is comprised of individuals who love dentistry, but, most importantly, they LOVE children, and they especially LOVE making a difference in the lives of these children.
We recognize that going to the dentist can be a scary experience for many children. Therefore, we accept each child exactly where he/she is in developing confidence and trust in our dental team.

Our philosophy is to “coach” children from an early age about what is expected when they visit the dentist. You will hear lots of positive reinforcement for good behavior. Rarely do you hear negative talk in our office. As a parent at Smiles for Keeps, you are asked to sit back and let us take the lead and do all the work. Our business, after all, is dentistry for your child, along with positive behavior management while your child is in our care.
Even though our main mission is dentistry for children, we do allow the parents of our patients to acquire dental services at Smiles for Keeps. Not only do we have pediatric dentists and general dentists who only see little ones, we also have general dentists who are well equipped to provide adult dental services. We recognize that your time is valuable, so if offering adult dental services can make your life easier, so much the better.

Our hope is that each patient will come to understand that good oral health is essential for overall good health. We not only care about your smile . . . We genuinely care about YOU!
